Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American rapper singer. Queen Latifah's career in television and music has been recognized with an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. In her early twenties Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah, which means gentle and loving in Arabic. Always tall, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward on the basketball team at her high school. She sang the song Home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her beatboxing career. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group, which included a number of MCs and the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to host Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
