Her parents are gospel stars Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick sings as well. At the age of a small girl, Houston began singing professionally with the choir of her church. She sang backing vocals for Chaka Khosn's song from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mom. In the year 1981, she did a stint as a fashion model, and was featured on the Seventeen album cover. Also, she provided back vocals for Lou Rawls and Jermaine. The high quality of her performance as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several major record labels, including Arista, with which she signed her contract in 1982, where she was with them for the rest of her career. The album she released as her debut Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album by the debut artist. Songs like The Greatest Love of All, How Will I Know If You Give Love and the song Saving all My Love were all released off the album. The songs allowed Houston to reach the seven US top tens which were higher than even those of the Beatles. In its debut US year, the album was sold over 3 million units. It went on to be bought by over more than 25 million worldwide and earned her the first Grammy. The Whitney sequel in 1987, featuring the singles Where Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to expand on the popularity of her first album. However, it was it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her position as one of the world's most popular performers. The film itself as well as the performance of her in it weren't widely reviewed, the soundtrack album as well as her rendition of the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You was the top of the singles and albums charts for a period of time and sold over 44 million copies all over the globe. In the same year, she was married to Bobby Brown who was a previous New Edition singer. She had their sole daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. They were married in March 1993.
